Turtle Dove (Streptopelia turtur)
Large, Height: 14 cm
The turtle dove is considered a messenger of luck or love, although its actual living conditions are less romantic. After losses of almost 90% of the German populations since 1980, the species is now highly endangered. Entire regions are now free of turtle doves. Originally found in floodplain forests and forest edges as well as around clearings, the preferred habitats of the turtle dove today are in human-used cultural landscapes with field groves and hedgerow structures or in open forests with undergrowth, but sometimes also in villages or settlements, or on former military training areas or in gravel and coal mining areas. The turtle dove prefers to stay where it finds sufficient and pesticide-free seeds from wild herbs and water for drinking. Ideally, ihr a mosaic of different types of land use and crops provides a rich food source throughout the breeding season. The turtle dove is the only one of our native pigeons to live as a migratory bird, exposing itself to new dangers such as climate change, habitat loss in the Sahel and legal and illegal hunting in the Mediterranean. Visually, the turtle dove is unmistakable among the domestic pigeons. Am au? is ihr colorful Ge? Eder, which seems almost exotic. It is unmistakable ihr distinctly stepped, dark tail with a white end. The top of the head and the outer upper head? Blankets appear blue-grey. On the other hand, the back and the inner uppers? Rust-brown quilts with black feather centres. The sides of the turtle dove's neck are adorned with a black and white striped spot. Throat and breast are delicately reddish in color. A distinctly reddish eyelid ring surrounds the orange-red eye.
